Use your own domain to get Maximum SEO Authority from your WordPress Blog

23 Jan

To attract traffic to your site you will need to have fresh engaging content so that your site visitors keep coming back.  One of the easiest ways to do this is by having a blog on your website.  We use WordPress because it has tons of great features for content creation, content management, and is integrated with all the major social media channels for content distribution.  Therefore, with WordPress it’s very easy to have all your content easily distributed to all the social media and other channels online.  It’s hard to beat this combination.

You can easily create a blog at wordpress.com.  When you do that your blog will have a wordpress domain name.  For instance our default domain at wordpress is coolmojito.wordpress.com.  You will want to change this domain however, because if you don’t then all the SEO value you get from your blog will go to the wordpress domain instead of your own domain.  Each visit to your blog will increase the authority of the domain name your visitors land on.  So you want that to be your domain name, not wordpress.  The greater your authority, the greater your online relevance, and the greater your SEO results and ranking.

To do this you’re actually configuring a domain name.  Our domain name is coolmojito.com.  The subdomain name is blog.coolmojito.com.

Add a domain

  • You need to make sure that your subdomain is already setup and pointing to your wordpress.com domain.  To do this go to your domain registrar and add a CNAME to do the domain pointing.  Every domain registrar does this slightly differently so contact the support services of your domain registrar if you’re not sure how to do this.

Pay to use this domain with the blog.

  • You will be prompted to make this payment.  The Cost is $12.  You can pay with Paypal or any major credit card.

Make your new domain the primary domain for your blog

  • Select the radio button under ‘Primary’ on the Domains page.  Click ‘Update Primary Domain’

Test your domain

  • Enter your domain, ex: blog.coolmojito.com, to see if your blog displays

Cool, your done!
